In the year 2009, the Council for Cultural Affairs (CCA) has commissioned the Graduate Institute of Museum Studies (GIMS) at the Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) to conduct a research project, which required GIMS to launch a survey on Taiwan museums of year 2008, and set up a website to present the survey result.
Its objective is to become a major platform in Chinese, for enhancing interaction among the museum professionals, researchers and scholars of museum and museum studies, and those concern about museum related subjects and on-going issues; in addition to showing the survey result, this website also provides its users with the most updated domestic and international museums and cultural heritage related news and information.
The 2009 survey topics include museum exhibitions, education, research, collections, publishing, and those related to policy and management; the information of the survey result conveys the performance of Taiwan museums in the year 2008. Although the results of the survey showed only 2008 performance of Taiwan museums, the users will still be able to retrieve newly updated information and observe yearly performance and development of Taiwan museums on the site thereafter, since the system allows surveyed museums to update information on their own on-line.
In the end of 2011, we announced the basic performance of 227 museums and collected a lists including 746 museums all over Taiwan. Although the complete survey reports are only available in Chinese, users of the English version of the site can get the basic information for some of the museums.
The Ministry of Culture (MOC), established in May 20, 2012, will host and support the museum survey program continuously, and endeavor to make content accessible to an international audience.
